Hey friends!
Let’s talk extensions. I tried beaded weft extensions for the first time about 8 weeks ago, and totally fell in love! I’ve always had an interest in extensions, and have previously tried out a couple different kinds including multi-clip in’s, single row clip in’s, and fusion extensions. I have gone from really healthy hair, to really damaged hair, and everything in between from not using extensions properly. Now I have tried extensions that don’t damage my hair at all.. but instead let my hair grow!
Here’s a summary of the most asked questions from my Insta Q & A:
“What type of extensions did you get?“
The type of extension method I got is called beaded weft! Beaded Weft is small silicone lined beads placed in a row, and thread that is used to sew a weft of hair (or even a few depending on the number of rows someone wants/needs) to the beads. From all the methods I’ve tried, this is definitely the most natural looking AND feeling! I wash my hair and style it just like I normally would!
“What length did you get?”
I have both 18″ and 22″ extensions! I started with the 18″ spontaneously 8 weeks ago for volume, and loved them so much I asked Megan to order me 22″ to go ALL ON MERMAID. Now I have one row of 18″ and one row of 22″.
“Are they comfortable? How long does it take to get use to them?”
Okay, this question was HUGE. And I got so many variations of it!
To answer quickly, yes.
They feel completely natural in day to day life. The only time I feel them is when I literally have my hand in my hair over the beads directly. I will say, just like having anything else done to your cosmetic, you definitely feel it when they’re first put in. To me, the first couple days feel as though you have a super tight pony tale. Megan suggested I take ibuprofen, and that did the trick to get through the initial tension!
“How do you brush your hair without pulling out the clips?”
Like I mentioned in my stories and a little bit above, beaded weft extensions are extremely natural and comfortable! I wash, dry, style, and brush my hair all the same as before, just a little gentler and mindful now. As your hair grows in between appointments, your extensions naturally move down with your hair. It’s important to maintain your extensions by going to have them moved up every 6-8 weeks because of this!
“Any tips on how to keep your hair healthy?“
From all of my extension experimenting, color, and style experimenting over the years, I’ve gone from healthy to fried and broken hair REALLY QUICK! I’ve also learned a few things about my hair, how I can keep it healthy, and how I can help it grow healthy. I am NOT a hair professional by ANY means. I do have a fab glam squad (Hi Meg 😉 ) that has taught me a thing or two, and I’ve tried out a lot.
Here’s what I’ve found:
- Everyone’s hair is different. Find what’s good for your hair! Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner. Finding a shampoo and conditioner that isn’t too heavy for your hair type, and isn’t too drying/brittle is crucial to healthy hair. Some “repair” products actually do more damage than good! Be careful with what you use for a long time. It’s always good to check with a professional if you’re having problems. My personal choice is Moroccan Oil Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. It’s a good balance for my hair, and honestly just smells amazing!
- Don’t be afraid of hair oil. A common misconception is that adding oil to your hair just makes it more oily. Blatantly, yes, but when applied correctly, hair oil isn’t applied to your scalp or roots where natural oil forms! Hair oil, like the Moroccan Oil I use, is a heat protectant, re-moisturizes your ends, and adds beautiful shine. I apply one to two pumps of oil into my palm, rub it together, then work it through my hair from the bottom up. I stop right about my ear, make sure I get it all worked in and off of my hands, brush everything out, and style! It’s that easy!
- Get a good dry shampoo. They don’t have to be expensive, but it will save your hair! I’ve found that some “trendy” dry shampoos cake on your hairline and scalp, leaving a ton of residue. That is not what you want!! Number one, that residue becomes brittle around your hair and can break it while you’re brushing or teasing. Number two, buildup on the scalp can be irritating to your skin and actually clog your hair follicles. Stay clear! There are nice dry shampoos that can extend your washes for multiple days if you really want them to, and not all break bank! One of my favorites is Batiste in the scent “tropical,” by no surprise. Haha. This one massages and blends well in to all hair colors, including brunettes, and if you apply sparingly with the perfect teammate of hair oil, doesn’t damage your hair when restyling. Another dry shampoo I really like is Moroccan Oil. They have a dry shampoo for light and dark tones alike, and it feels similar to Batiste. It also pairs well with the rest of the product line and simply smells amazing 🙂
